About Baytown
With a population of more than 77,000, Baytown, Texas, is located in the Gulf Coast region of the United States, just east of Houston, the nation’s fourth largest city. Those who live and work in Baytown will find an area rich in history, as well as opportunities for outdoor activities due to its proximity to scenic waterways, namely Galveston Bay, the San Jacinto River and Buffalo Bayou.
Founded in 1919, ExxonMobil’s Baytown Complex is located on approximately 3,400 acres along the Houston Ship Channel, about 25 miles east of Houston. Employing a workforce of more than 8,500, it is comprised of four manufacturing sites, including one in nearby Mont Belvieu, and a global technology center. These include the Baytown Refinery, one of the largest refineries in the United States, and the Baytown Olefins Plant, one of the largest ethylene plants in the world.
Its scope of products includes fuels, lube oils, and chemical compounds used in a diverse range of products, from auto battery cases, diapers and tire inner tubes to pharmaceutical uses, food packaging, trash bags and more.
The Baytown area sites are highly integrated, which makes the plants and products more efficient as we develop technologies to make cleaner fuels and work together to operate more safely and reliably.

What role you will play in our team
The Planning Economist Role at the ExxonMobil Refinery in Baytown, TX supports the economics team by setting the basis for the refinery production plan, drive strategic insight to enhance profitability, inform crude and feed stock purchase strategy, and deliver quality modeling of economics for production, project economics and annual business planning purposes.
What you will do
Production Planning
Interface with process unit Business Teams to maintain and update planned maintenance work unit impacts.
Lead capacity exception optimization process with business coordinators + econs group once a month prior to final refinery run plan submission (LP Case)
Identify and initiate work pairing optimizations/conversations, resolve work pairing conflicts, maintain updated database of upcoming unit maintenance and production impacts.
Guide new employees through the process of communicating unit maintenance impacts to the organization.
Refinery Run Plan Scenario Development- LP Modeling
Set up base run plan LP cases (crude avails, pricing, product demands, anticipated unit constraints/limits)
Run/test cases (M+1, M+2, M+3 timeframe) on ASPEN PIMS and troubleshooting arising issues.
Validate model output and submit cases to USGC refinery circuit optimization team.
Own refinery run plan scenarios and provide continuous updates to circuit level economists regarding any changes to case setups for M+1, M+2, M+3 time periods.
Clean case depth analysis
Set and maintain the refinery clean case basis (theoretical best performance)
Complete monthly depth analysis to identify deviations from best performance and communicate opportunities for improvement
Drive action on identified opportunities by helping business teams to pursue maintenance, upgrades, test runs, break down barriers preventing improved profitability.
Present opportunities and achieved gains in profitability to management on a monthly basis.
About you
Skills and Qualifications
Basic understanding of Refinery Process Units and overall refinery flow
Track record of identification and implementation of business opportunities
Strong teamwork and mentorship
Preferred Qualifications/ Experience
Optimization Experience using Linear Programming Tools (e.g. ASPEN PIMS or similar)
Optional: Crude Supply and trading competency
Optional: Project development competency
