What role you will play in our team

Mechanical Apprentices will work in our workshops and out on the site, installing pumps, compressors, turbines and machine components. With the foundations of your training in traditional engineering, you will also use cutting-edge technology to embrace new ways of working. Reliability is one of the key aspects of the successful operation of our site.  It is equipment reliability that has led to Fawley Refinery being one of the most productive in the UK.  During your time as an apprentice, you will learn to analyse failure modes, identify the root cause and help develop and implement solutions to prevent repeat failures.  You will also learn how to use cutting edge technology to set up our machinery within precise tolerances so that they run at their best.

For Electrical Apprentices, power is the key to everything at Fawley. Without it, we couldn’t do what we do. Since we use as much electricity as the whole of Southampton, we even have our own power plant! You will develop skills that range from working with low-voltage alarm systems, right up to 11,000 volt motors. You’ll gain knowledge of substations, plant areas, switch gears and all the ins and outs of alarm and lighting circuits. All in all, you’ll gain fundamental skills for life in an area that’s fundamental to our business.

An Instrumentation/Analyser Apprenticeship at ExxonMobil Fawley is both challenging and rewarding. A technical trade in an engineering environment in which you will learn a very wide variety of hand skills and trade based knowledge. Instruments are used to measure and control all the processes that take place on site, as well as providing automated shutdown sequences to ensure the site runs safely.  Within the Instrumentation team you will develop the ability to test, maintain, repair and install instruments as well as learning the technical basis of their operation. Fawley site is home to a wide range of instrument types. You will acquire the skills to work on pneumatic, hydraulic, mechanical and electrical equipment. There are numerous transferrable skills within instrumentation that can be applied to many roles across multiple industries.  As part of the Analyser team you will make up a vital part of the maintenance team that are responsible for the quality control of, not just the final product that is shipped all over the world, but also the environmental regulations that allow the refinery to keep running.  Our analysers are responsible for quality analysis of the major component that goes into every car tyre, as well as approximately 15% of the Petrol used in the UK.  The analysers measure a range from the Oxygen content in our furnaces to the amount of octane blended into the petrol you use to fill up your car.  As part of the Instrument/Analyser apprenticeship you will learn how these critical pieces of equipment work and how to maintain them!
