Responsibilities

1. Technical Skills & Knowledge

A machinist must understand the entire lifecycle of a part, from a raw block of metal to a finished product.

• Blueprint Reading: The ability to interpret complex technical drawings, including understanding GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) symbols.
  
  
• Precision Measurement: Mastery of measuring tools to ensure parts meet tolerances (often within 0.001 of an inch).
  
  
  • Micrometers and Calipers
    
    
  • Bore Gauges and Height Gauges
    
    
  • CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machines)
    
    
• Tooling Knowledge: Understanding which cutting tools (end mills, drills, inserts) and materials (aluminum, steel, titanium) are best suited for a specific job.
  
  
• Machine Setup: Selecting the correct work-holding devices (vises, chucks, fixtures) and "touching off" tools to set zero points.
  
  

2. Computer & Software Literacy

Modern machining is increasingly digital. You don?t need to be a software engineer, but you must be tech-savvy.

• G-Code and M-Code: The foundational programming languages used to tell the machine how to move.
  
  
• CAM Software: Proficiency in software like Mastercam, Fusion 360, or SolidWorks to convert 3D models into machine instructions.
  
  
• CNC Controller Operation: Familiarity with interfaces like Fanuc, Haas, or Mazak to input data and make offsets.
